Doing part of Internet Safety

I talked to my mom.  She is 53.
It was easy and positive.  I thought it was very valuable because I still have a little brother at home.  I think some of the things I mentioned made my mom nervous though.  I shared the ideas from the the video that I watched.  I also told her that a good idea is to have a central computer so that everyone can see what they are doing on the computer at all times.  I told her another good idea is before kids can even create a social network, they must write down their username and password and put it in an envelop that is sealed.  So if they disappear you have access to their accounts.

Internet Safety Video

I watched the video Frontline.  It was one hour long and really opened up my eyes to a side of the internet I never knew about.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/kidsonline/view/

1.  I never realized what all was on the internet just because I never look for those kinds of things.  I learned how important it is to teach children about internet safety and about being nice on the internet.
2.  I will teach that just as much as their actions have consequences in person they also have consequences on the internet.  They just may not be able to see it.  I also want to stress that the internet is an amazing thing to have and to be sure to use it for good wholesome activities.
3.  I can teach my family and friends the things that I have learned and stress to them to teach their kids!

Video Project

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eV6d8YjDV4g

I think this form of technology would be particularly helpful for illustrating concepts such as communication.  It's one thing to explain what a topic is, its another to see it demonstrated.  It also make it so much more entertaining and attention grabber.

I would like to try and make a video for each unit for the most abstract concept in each.

Listening

One of the most important aspects of communication
Passive listening
Derek: So I was sitting in class talking about harry potter…
Jackie: just watching
Derek: the cruciators curse! Can you believe he said that!? Then
Jackie: just watching
Derek: “So it made me realize horcruxes are really symbolic of..
Jackie: just watching
Active listening
Erica: April I have to tell you, I went running yesterday on the trail on 32nd.
Ape: oh yeah that’s a good one!  I ran there too, what time were you there?
Erica: I went at 10 and guess what was on the trail!?
Ape: what!?
Erica: a huge snake!
April: ugh!  What did you do??
Erica: turned around and ran even faster! Haha when I got back home I was so sweaty!
April: aw gross!

Twitter

http://twitter.com/#!/EricaHaggard

1.  I learned how to use twitter completely!  I had no idea how to even use it!  I learned about hashtags, my husband didn't even know what those were!  what a great way to be linked to people interested in the same things as you.
2.  I could see using twitter on topics that are controversial, or things that require being followed such as a breaking news story.  This would be really helpful for students to write a research paper after they have followed a topic on twitter and gotten both sides of the topic and being able to gain their own understanding of it.  This is something I as a teacher cannot offer my students.
3.  I think twitter is a good way to get the students out into the 'real world'.  It helps them see critical things that go on everyday outside of their high school lives.  Things that could/will impact them.  It could help to diversify them as well.
